Habitual offender Angela Shand faces extended jail term

Published on

Angela Shand, a habitual offender with a history of 60 court appearances, faced repercussions for her disrespectful behavior towards Judge Mark Watson at Nottingham Crown Court. Following her outburst, where she swore at the judge and refused to apologize, Shand received an extended prison sentence in addition to the initial eight-week term.

Judge Watson emphasized Shand’s troubling behavior towards law enforcement, stating, “Your record of offending against the police is without parallel.” This incident mirrors previous cases like that of Constance Marten, who also faced consequences for disruptive conduct during her trial.

The judge admonished Shand for failing to respect law enforcement officers, highlighting the challenges they face in their duties. Despite claiming support from the church, Shand’s behavior remained unacceptable, leading to further legal consequences.

During the sentencing, Shand angrily protested the judge’s decision, resulting in additional jail time. Despite a chance to apologize, Shand refused to return to court, prompting Judge Watson to increase her jail term by four weeks.

Lowri Butterworth, the prosecutor, detailed Shand’s violent actions towards a police officer during a welfare check, followed by racially-charged misconduct at the custody suite. Shand pleaded guilty to assault of an emergency worker and racially-aggravated harassment related to the April 11 incident.

With a lengthy criminal record of 60 convictions and 157 offenses, including numerous incidents involving law enforcement, Shand’s behavior remains a cause for concern. Despite recent engagement with the Arena Church in Ilkeston for support, Shand’s volatile nature continues to pose challenges.

Legal representative Digby Johnson acknowledged Shand’s regret for her courtroom behavior, attributing it to her short temper. Johnson emphasized Shand’s reluctance to worsen her situation by returning to court for an apology, aiming to avoid further trouble.
