“Grandmother’s Sepsis Nightmare: Negligence Leads to Amputations”

Published on

A 69-year-old grandmother faced a severe health crisis when negligent healthcare professionals discharged her with antibiotics, leading to sepsis and subsequent amputations of her fingers and toes. Shirley Bartam was rushed to the hospital after experiencing intense pain, vomiting, a racing heart rate, and not urinating for over 12 hours – all classic symptoms of sepsis. Despite showing signs of sepsis, doctors misdiagnosed her with a kidney infection and sent her home with oral antibiotics.

Her condition deteriorated rapidly, and she was readmitted to the hospital the next day, where tests confirmed she was battling sepsis due to a kidney infection. Shirley was placed in an induced coma and spent over four weeks in intensive care and nine weeks in the hospital. Following sepsis treatment, her hands and feet tissues began to die, leading to the amputation of four fingers, a thumb, and the tips of all her toes.

Struggling with daily tasks like cooking and walking, Shirley expressed her frustration at the sudden loss of independence. She highlighted the challenges she faces, such as the inability to hold a pen or perform simple activities like buttoning clothes and washing her hair. Shirley’s emotional and physical struggles have taken a toll on her daily life, making her reliant on assistance for basic tasks.

Seeking justice, Shirley engaged a clinical negligence firm to investigate her case, as the NHS Trust admitted to the failure in administering proper treatment. Despite this acknowledgment, the Trust denied liability for her injuries, leaving Shirley feeling unsettled about the care she received. Determined to raise awareness about sepsis, Shirley hopes her story will prevent others from enduring similar hardships.

As Shirley continues to advocate for sepsis awareness during Sepsis Awareness Month, legal proceedings are ongoing to secure the support and therapies she needs for her rehabilitation. Her representative emphasized the difficulties Shirley has faced due to life-changing injuries, urging the Trust to address the remaining issues in her case promptly.

Sepsis, a life-threatening condition triggered by infections, remains a significant global health concern, claiming thousands of lives annually in the UK. Recognizing the symptoms of sepsis, such as slurred speech, confusion, extreme shivering, and mottled skin, is crucial for early detection and treatment. The immune system’s overreaction to infections can lead to organ failure and septic shock, emphasizing the importance of timely medical intervention.

For further comments, the NHS has been contacted for an official statement on the matter.
