“Government Warns of Scammers Targeting Benefit Recipients”

Published on

The government has issued a nationwide security alert, particularly for individuals receiving means-tested benefits, due to recent instances of money disappearing from their bank accounts. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) is urging caution to prevent falling victim to scammers in the upcoming months.

Beginning today, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will be dispatching notifications to eligible recipients nationwide, informing them of a £150 reduction on their energy bills as part of the government’s Warm Home Discount scheme for 2025/26. The allocated funds will be sent directly to energy suppliers to lower the bill amounts for qualifying households, rather than being distributed to individuals.

Despite this initiative, scammers are actively attempting to deceive individuals into believing they need to apply for the Warm Home Discount and that the money will be directly transferred to them. These fraudsters are deceiving people into providing their bank details, thereby stealing their money instead of providing the promised £150 reduction.

The DESNZ stresses that there is no requirement to apply for the scheme and warns the public to be cautious of any texts or emails related to it, as they are likely scams.

This winter, an additional 2.7 million households will be eligible for the Warm Home Discount, extending the total number of benefiting households to over six million, thereby assisting more individuals in reducing their energy expenses. The scheme offers a £150 reduction on bills, with most households automatically receiving the discount.

For residents in England or Wales, the electricity supplier will automatically apply the discount to the bill. An updated list of participating energy suppliers can be found on gov.uk, and eligible individuals will receive a notification letter.

Letters will commence distribution from mid-October and may be received until December. If no letter is received by January or if the rebate is not directly applied to the energy account, individuals who believe they meet the criteria should contact the Warm Home Discount helpline, with details available on gov.uk when the helpline launches in late October.

In 2024, UK scams resulted in a significant loss of £11.4 billion, with victims losing an average of £1,400 each, according to the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA). The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) scams, in particular, have led to substantial financial losses, with criminals potentially gaining tens of millions of pounds through Universal Credit scams alone in 2019.

The DESNZ spokesperson issued a warning against sharing bank details for the Warm Home Discount scheme and advised individuals to be cautious of suspicious texts and emails, emphasizing the receipt of an official letter for confirmation.

It is essential to be vigilant, as scammers are actively targeting individuals during this period, and the government advises against sharing personal information or clicking on links in unsolicited communications.
