Conservationists in the United Kingdom have been tirelessly working to preserve a rare bird species from extinction. Mark Thomas, a conservationist, credits much of the recent success in protecting the Montagu’s harrier population in the UK to the exceptional breeding abilities of one male bird known as AU. This 10-year-old male, nicknamed after the chemical symbol for gold, has fathered 16 offspring, with 10 born in the last two years.

According to Thomas, AU is vital in sustaining the species in the UK and has become a cornerstone in their preservation efforts. Montagu’s harriers are migratory birds that breed in Europe during the spring after spending their winters in Africa and parts of Asia. While globally their numbers are declining, they are listed as a species of least concern on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List.

In the UK, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) reports a rapid decline in the Montagu’s harrier population, with only 13 breeding pairs in the mid-aughts after a period of zero pairs in the ’70s. The success of AU in breeding has been a significant boost to the species’ survival in the UK.

AU’s acrobatic mating displays have attracted the attention of multiple females, resulting in successful nesting and the birth of six new chicks this year. Conservationists are hopeful that AU’s offspring, particularly his sons, will return to the UK to breed in the future. The conservation efforts include closely monitoring the nests, protecting the hatchlings from predators, and attaching satellite trackers to two juvenile harriers for the first time to track their migration patterns.
