Geoff Burrow, the father of the late Rob Burrow, has expressed solidarity with Lewis Moody following the revelation of his motor neurone disease (MND) diagnosis. Moody, aged 47, shared the heartbreaking news during an emotional interview.
Joining a list of former rugby stars diagnosed with the degenerative muscle-wasting ailment, Moody has now faced the same fate as rugby icons Doddie Weir and Burrow, who lost their lives to the disease. Burrow, who battled MND for five years, succumbed to it at 41 years old in June last year.
Moody was visibly moved when discussing his apprehensions about the future, prompting a message of support from Geoff. Through a post on X, Geoff encouraged people to contribute to a fundraiser aimed at assisting Moody and his family during this challenging period.
The fundraiser seeks to gather approximately £130,000 for Moody and his loved ones. The GoFundMe Page bio describes Moody’s resilience, emphasizing the need for financial support to address his post-diagnosis needs and chosen charitable causes.
Notably, Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield, former rugby league teammates, raised substantial funds for charity and raised awareness about MND. Their efforts were recognized with a CBE before Burrow’s passing. Prince William surprised them at Headingley Stadium, where they both played for Leeds Rhinos.
Meanwhile, Moody shared his diagnosis candidly in an emotional BBC interview, expressing his current struggle with confronting the future. A key figure in England’s Rugby World Cup victory in 2003, Moody had a distinguished career with 71 appearances for England over a decade, achieving domestic success with Leicester and Bath.
