The Federal Court has mandated the disclosure of previously undisclosed sections from a crucial September 1986 report commissioned for a federal inquiry on war crimes. The ruling by Federal Court Justice Simon Fothergill, revealed today, instructs the government to reveal redacted segments of the study concerning the settlement of suspected Nazi war criminals in Canada post-World War II.
B’nai Brith Canada has persistently advocated for the release of more information from the report compiled by researcher Alti Rodal. In response to an information request from B’nai Brith, Library and Archives Canada unveiled additional parts of the report in February 2024 but retained certain sections, including those detailing the involvement of American intelligence agencies in aiding the relocation of Nazi collaborators in Canada.
In his decision, Fothergill dismissed the government’s argument that releasing specific details would have negative implications on Canada’s international relationships.
