“Father Convicted of Murder and Abuse in Baby’s Death”

A father from North Carolina has been convicted of second-degree murder and severe child abuse in the tragic death of his 12-week-old daughter in 2022. Nicholas Shane Stephenson, 37, was found guilty of torturing, neglecting, and starving his baby girl, Riley, to the extent that her skin was loose on her body.

Superior Court Judge George Bell sentenced Stephenson to a minimum of 27 years behind bars, with 200 to 252 months for murder and an additional 125 to 162 months for the child abuse charge. Buncombe County District Attorney Todd Williams expressed gratitude to the jury for holding Stephenson accountable for the heartless cruelty inflicted on the innocent child.

Riley’s mother, Diandra Fuhr-Farlow, previously confessed to serious child abuse and testified against Stephenson in court. Initially facing a first-degree murder charge, Fuhr-Farlow provided evidence that led to Stephenson’s conviction for second-degree murder.

Authorities responded to a distress call from Fuhr-Farlow reporting her daughter’s unresponsiveness at their home in Candler. Little Riley displayed visible injuries including bruises and burns on her face and was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Medical evaluations revealed that Riley had suffered a broken collarbone, multiple broken ribs, a broken arm, burn marks on her face, and signs of dehydration. Contrary to previous reports of her good health, the investigation uncovered the extent of her injuries and neglect.

Fuhr-Farlow initially claimed that some injuries were accidental, but later alleged that Stephenson had deliberately harmed Riley, including shaking her until she cried and choking her. Both parents faced charges that were elevated to first-degree murder based on autopsy findings and consultation with the district attorney.

The medical examiner’s report highlighted Riley’s severe underweight condition, florid pneumonia, lack of medication, and minimal nourishment at the time of her death. The tragic case has led to legal consequences for the parents involved, with justice being served for the innocent child.
