“DWP Updates Guidelines for Parental Universal Credit Benefits”

Published on

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued fresh guidelines on how to apply for Universal Credit benefits if you are a parent. A recent update on the GOV.UK website details the additional support available to individuals responsible for child care. If your first child was born prior to April 6, 2017, you may qualify for an extra £339 per month in Universal Credit. For children born on or after April 6, 2017, or for second children, the additional amount is £292.81. Typically, there are no extra payments for a third child or more, except in specific cases like having twins.

The supplementary amount received will continue until August 31 after the child turns 16. Payments can extend until the child reaches 19 if they are pursuing full-time education or approved training. An additional monthly allowance may be granted for disabled children, regardless of the number of children in the household.

Regarding employment and Universal Credit claims, eligibility hinges on being the primary caregiver and the child’s age, as outlined on the GOV.UK page. It is necessary to designate a primary caregiver, with single parents automatically assuming this role. While there is no work requirement when the youngest child is under one year old, by age 3, parents are generally expected to start working or preparing for employment. If not the primary caregiver and not engaged in full-time work, individuals are typically expected to seek full-time employment.

The GOV.UK page also provides information on reclaiming up to 85% of childcare expenses for Universal Credit claimants who are working or preparing to work. The maximum monthly reimbursement is £1,031.88 for one child or £1,768.94 for two or more children. Qualified childcare services must be offered by registered providers, including nurseries, preschools, after-school programs, childminders, nannies, and school holiday clubs. Claims for childcare costs are processed through the Universal Credit account, allowing reimbursement for up to three months of past childcare expenses.

For optimal reimbursement, it is advised to report childcare expenses promptly after payment, as delays exceeding two months may impact the reimbursement process. Claims can also be made up to three months in advance, but reimbursement is contingent on the delivery of the childcare services.
