“Dutch Work-Life Balance Lures UK Expats”

Published on

A trending topic in the UK lately has been the discussion around implementing a four-day workweek. While some local councils like South Cambridgeshire District Council have experimented with it, the concept has not gained widespread acceptance across the country.

Conversely, in countries like the Netherlands, there is a growing openness towards this idea. Many Brits have chosen to relocate to the Netherlands in recent years, attracted to the lifestyle offered in this European nation.

One such individual is Hannah, a project manager at a fashion company and a mother of two young children. Having lived in the Netherlands for 15 years, she has no intentions of returning to the UK. Hannah shared her perspective, emphasizing the work ethic, target achievement, and culture of trust and freedom in Dutch workplaces that she finds rewarding.

She highlighted the contrast with the UK work culture, noting the pressure to optimize every moment compared to a more balanced approach in the Netherlands, where work-life boundaries are respected, and family time is prioritized.

Similarly, Ravi, another British expat residing in Amsterdam, echoed Hannah’s sentiments, praising the Dutch lifestyle that emphasizes a work-life balance and values family time. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a sense of balance between work and personal life.

The trend of Brits relocating to the Netherlands is not limited to a few individuals. Jennie Mono, originally from Scotland, moved to Amsterdam in 2007 for a job opportunity and has since chosen to make the Netherlands her long-term home. She expressed her deep appreciation for the quality of life in Amsterdam and her intention to stay until retirement, highlighting the love she has for her current lifestyle.

Jennie acknowledged the possibility of returning to the UK in the distant future but affirmed her contentment with her current life in the Netherlands.
