“Digital Crisis: Slowest Streets in UK Struggle with Snail-Paced Broadband”

Published on

The desire for quicker broadband is universal, yet not everyone is receiving adequate download speeds. Numerous regions in the country continue to struggle with subpar internet connectivity, leading to a digital crisis in certain households. Recent data from Broadband Genie highlights the most problematic postcodes for broadband, with a particularly dire situation in Heol-Y-Fedw, Cymmer, Port Talbot.

Residents of this Welsh street are encountering sluggish speeds as low as 0.81 Mbps, which falls short of the minimum requirements for streaming services like Netflix and Disney+. To put it into perspective, downloading a movie at this speed would take over 15 and a half hours.

Heol-Y-Fedw, Cymmer is a staggering 1,494 times slower than the fastest street in the UK, where the same movie could be downloaded in just 40 seconds.

Additional areas facing similar connectivity challenges include Turnberry Crescent in Aberdeen, Wesley Street in Maesteg, and Occupation Lane in Lincoln.

Below are the top 10 streets with the worst broadband speeds:

  • Heol-Y-Fedw, Cymmer, Port Talbot – Speed 0.81Mbps
  • Turnberry Crescent, Bridge of Don, Aberdeen – Speed 1.06Mbps
  • Wesley Street, Maesteg – Speed 1.45Mbps
  • Occupation Lane, Broadholme, Lincoln – Speed 1.63Mbps
  • Rossiter Road, London – Speed 1.74Mbps
  • Quarry Close, Handbridge, Chester – Speed 2.23Mbps
  • Langley Street, Langley – Speed 2.23Mbps
  • Jessop Road, Rogerstone, Newport – Speed 2.62Mbps
  • Wakefield Close, Hurley, Atherstone – Speed 2.66Mbps
  • Rheolau Terrace, Pontypridd – Speed 2.80Mbps

For residents in these areas, there is hope. Broadband Genie suggests that many of these streets have access to improved connectivity options, such as switching providers or upgrading to full fibre from copper cables.

According to Broadband Genie, all ten slowest streets in the UK have Fibre to the Cabinet broadband (FTTC) available, offering download speeds of around 35Mb. Furthermore, seven streets can access Ultrafast broadband with speeds exceeding 100Mb, while four of the slowest streets have access to full fibre broadband.

Broadband Genie’s Alex Tofts provides 5 essential tips for improving broadband speeds:

  1. Test your broadband speed to identify performance issues.
  2. Optimize router placement for better coverage.
  3. Switch to the 5Ghz frequency for faster Wi-Fi speeds.
  4. Ensure router security by monitoring connected devices and removing any unauthorized users.
