Davis Cup Star Dan Evans Contemplates Team Exit

Published on

Dan Evans, a prominent figure in the Davis Cup, expressed his frustration in 2022 when he considered quitting the Great Britain team due to feeling slighted by a selection choice. The seasoned singles player, who contributed to Britain’s Davis Cup victory in 2015, was particularly displeased about not being chosen for the doubles event, hinting at a possible withdrawal from the esteemed team tennis competition. Despite not regularly featuring in doubles matches on the tour, Evans asserted that his ability in doubles did not require additional validation through tour play, emphasizing that his performance in doubles matches has been satisfactory whenever he has participated.

In an interview with the i, Evans conveyed his disappointment and a sense of being undervalued, stating his belief that selection for Davis Cup doubles matches should not solely hinge on rankings but also consider players’ game styles. His dissatisfaction stemmed from being excluded from the doubles lineup at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals in Austria, where he was limited to singles matches while Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury represented Britain in the doubles rubber. Evans recounted his efforts to secure a place in the doubles, expressing bewilderment at never being chosen and hinting at a potential reevaluation of his participation in future Davis Cup events.

The following year, Evans found success with Skupski in the doubles event during a match against Colombia, contributing to Britain’s 3-1 victory and securing a place in the Davis Cup Finals. However, his journey was cut short in 2023 due to an injury, preventing him from participating in the finals.

As the 2025 Davis Cup Finals unfold, Britain is absent following a defeat to Japan in the initial qualifying round. Italy, led by Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli, advanced to the semi-finals after a triumph over Austria. Despite missing key players Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti, Italy displayed a strong performance, with Berrettini and Cobolli securing victories against their opponents. Italy is set to face Belgium in the upcoming semi-final matchup.
