Cricket icon Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff recently disclosed that he lost all his teeth in a severe car accident while filming an episode of Top Gear in 2022. The crash left Flintoff with post-traumatic stress disorder, and he shared this heartbreaking revelation during a public appearance at the Victoria Palace Theatre.
During the event, Flintoff recounted pivotal moments in his life, including an anecdote about consuming 13 pints before scoring 142 runs against South Africa. He briefly mentioned the harrowing crash that left him with no natural teeth for the first time, along with sustaining significant injuries, such as losing a substantial part of his upper lip.
The accident occurred at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome when the trike Flintoff was driving overturned while filming Top Gear. In a documentary on Disney+, Flintoff confessed that he thought he had died as the vehicle rolled over, causing complex injuries, including hard and soft tissue damage, broken and missing teeth, and fractures in the upper jaw bone.
Despite considering that life might have been easier if he had perished in the crash, Flintoff clarified that he never harbored suicidal thoughts. Cricket played a pivotal role in his recovery, with Flintoff emphasizing that the sport provided him with support and purpose during his healing journey.
Since the accident, Flintoff has resumed his involvement in cricket, coaching teams like the Northern Superchargers and the England Lions. His wife, Rachael, credited cricket for saving him and giving him a renewed sense of purpose.
Following the incident, Top Gear was put on hold by the BBC in 2023, while Flintoff has appeared in other television projects like Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams and hosted a revamped version of the darts show Bullseye.
