President Donald Trump has reportedly requested Apple to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its maps according to a senior U.S. government official. The renaming initiative has stirred controversy among Canadians amidst ongoing trade tensions. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum mentioned that Trump communicated directly with Apple regarding the name change, indicating that the alteration to “Lake America” could be imminent.

Trump’s executive order to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” was signed shortly after trade negotiations between Canada and the U.S. collapsed, leading to significant U.S. tariffs on various Canadian products. In response, Canada announced retaliatory tariffs slated to take effect in the near future.

Despite the push for the name change, Prime Minister Mark Carney firmly rejected it, asserting that Lake Ontario, situated between Ontario and New York state, will remain known as Lake Ontario “now and always.” Google Maps announced that users in the U.S. would see the updated name as “Lake America” due to official government sources recognizing the change.

While Canadian Google Maps users will continue to see Lake Ontario, some websites in Canada briefly displayed “Lake America” following the announcement. However, several affected maps, including those on Ontario-based websites like Hydro One and LCBO, reverted to displaying Lake Ontario.

Regarding Apple’s response to Trump’s request for the name change on its maps, there has been no immediate comment from the company. As of the latest check on Apple Maps in Canada, the lake is still identified as Lake Ontario. It is noted that Trump had previously issued a similar executive order in 2025 renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, impacting federal documents and geographic services. Apple Maps currently refers to the area as “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).”
