“Concerns Mount Over US and Israel Military Strikes on Iran”

Published on

Ill-considered, unwise, and against the law.

That’s my view on the recent coordinated military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran. I am pleased to see that the majority of the public shares this sentiment.

It is unacceptable to unilaterally launch attacks on a sovereign nation and escalate tensions in the Middle East simply due to political disagreements. The Iranian government is known for its corruption and brutal treatment of its own people, including widespread human rights abuses against women and minorities.

Despite past failed interventions in countries like Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and Syria, some individuals still fail to grasp that military actions cannot forcibly establish democracy. The cycle of violence, such as the recent bombing of a school in southern Iran, is likely to repeat without a clear post-conflict plan. The consequences of such actions lead to more suffering and chaos, which is a situation worse than living under a repressive regime.

It is crucial to resist the calls for war from those who lack a comprehensive strategy, legal justification, or defined objectives. I commend the Prime Minister for prioritizing Britain’s interests and upholding international legal norms, unlike certain political factions willing to disregard established laws and principles.

Deploying troops into combat is a weighty decision that should only be made to safeguard national security as a last resort. The Prime Minister’s decision reflects a commitment to protecting British citizens and interests through lawful means.

Given the precarious situation in the region, with British citizens at risk and facing threats from the Iranian regime, defensive measures, including the use of military bases for interception purposes, are essential for self-defense and compliance with international law.

During times of conflict, the opposition’s response is a test of their commitment to national interests over political gains. Upholding international legal standards is imperative in such situations, requiring actions that prioritize what is morally right.

In a local context, the recent water supply disruption in my constituency highlights longstanding infrastructure failures by Thames Water. Despite promised investments to upgrade aging pipelines, the lack of clear timelines for completion continues to frustrate residents.

As we cheer on Arsenal in their quest for victory, let’s also acknowledge the success of Islington’s own Arsenal Women, the European champions, who are competing in the quarter-finals.

The unchecked misuse of social media platforms by entities like Russia to spread misinformation and undermine democracies demands immediate action. The upcoming Foreign Affairs Committee hearing with major tech companies aims to address this issue and will be livestreamed on YouTube.

Emily Thornberry serves as the Chair of the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee.
