Athletes are showcasing their talents at the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games in Corner Brook this week, with a dedicated team of over 300 volunteers in orange shirts ensuring smooth operations behind the scenes.

Transition day at the Games welcomed the arrival of the second group of athletes to the city, with sports activities set to resume in the evening. Duane Huxter has been diligently preparing merchandise for the athletes at the Corner Brook Civic Centre, where he has been folding t-shirts for over a week now.

Volunteers play a crucial role in various aspects of the Games, from collaborating with local authorities to coordinate logistics to ensuring the seamless flow of events at different venues. Dave Campbell, the games director with SportNL and a member of the Games host committee, emphasized the importance of community collaboration for the event’s success.

According to Campbell, the strong community connections of the volunteer group have been instrumental in the Games’ smooth operation. He highlighted the essential role volunteers play in events like these, emphasizing the significant support from communities like Corner Brook and Stephenville.

Managing clothing for 10 teams is a substantial task, but Huxter recognizes its impact on creating lasting memories for the athletes. While his role may have been smaller, such as assisting at the opening ceremonies, he finds fulfillment in contributing to the athletes’ positive experience.

Despite the physical demands of the work, Huxter is motivated by the goal of ensuring athletes leave the event with a positive impression. Seeing the athletes proudly representing their regions, dressed in the shirts he meticulously folded, fills him and his fellow volunteers with a sense of accomplishment and pride.
