Chocoholics Face 72% Price Surge on Festive Treats

Published on

Chocoholics are facing a significant surge in prices for festive treats, with some products seeing a staggering 72% increase compared to last Christmas, according to recent research. The consumer group Which? has observed a sharp rise in the cost of various seasonal essentials. Among the categories analyzed, chocolate has experienced the highest inflation rate, with prices soaring by an average of 14.2% over the past year due to issues like poor cocoa harvests and supply chain challenges.

One notable example is the Lindt Lindor milk chocolate truffles treat box (37g) at Asda, which has spiked from £1.15 to £1.98, marking a substantial 72.2% price hike. Similarly, at Morrisons, the price of Lindt Milk Chocolate Teddy Christmas Tree Decorations has surged from £3.50 to £6, reflecting a 71.4% increase. Additional increases were observed at Morrisons and Tesco for various chocolate products, indicating a trend of rising prices in the chocolate category.

Furthermore, the cost of Christmas turkeys has also seen an increase, with prices up by 4.7% year-on-year across different cuts and sizes. Factors such as bird flu outbreaks and escalating operational expenses for farmers are contributing to the uptick in turkey prices. Notably, a Tesco Finest Free Range Bronze Turkey Crown Medium (2.99kg) has surged by £14.95, climbing from £53.82 to £68.77, representing a substantial 27.8% price rise.

According to the Which? tracker, Waitrose experienced the highest price escalation of 6.2% in the year leading to November, while Asda registered the lowest increase at 3%, outperforming discount competitors Aldi and Lidl in terms of price stability.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, emphasized the importance of monitoring individual item prices, as some products have witnessed significant year-on-year price spikes. She recommended budget-conscious shoppers to consider shopping at Aldi, Lidl, and Asda, known for their lower inflation rates and overall cost-effectiveness. Sewraz also advised consumers to pay attention to unit prices for effective comparison while shopping to secure the best deals.

Responding to the findings, an Asda spokesperson highlighted the supermarket’s commitment to maintaining low prices for customers throughout the year, particularly during the festive season. They emphasized that Asda’s affordability extends to all shoppers, not just loyalty cardholders. Similarly, a Morrisons spokesperson reiterated the brand’s dedication to offering quality products at competitive prices, with additional benefits for More Card members to enhance their shopping experience.
