British beach visitors have received a cautionary alert as several Portuguese man o’ war have washed up on the UK coastline. Reports indicate sightings of these jellyfish-like creatures in various locations such as Sennen, Crantock, and Longrock in Cornwall. Descriptions included one specimen being labeled as a “monster.”

These creatures, recognized for their large size and peculiar appearance, possess a venomous sting that can be extremely painful, causing skin welts. Despite typically inhabiting tropical waters, there has been a rise in their presence near British shores.

Instances of severe stings from man o’ war have been documented, some resulting in fatalities due to allergic reactions. The NCI St Ives shared a photo on Facebook showing numerous Portuguese man o’ war washed up on Sennen Beach, advising caution for those entering the sea.

A witness, Amanda Duffin, reported encountering “massive” man o’ war on Longrock beach near Penzance, emphasizing the need for dog walkers to be vigilant. These creatures are not jellyfish but rather a rare species known as ‘zooids,’ incapable of swimming and drifting with ocean currents and winds.

Identifiable by their purple float, blue-purple tentacles, and pink-tipped crest, man o’ war may appear translucent when washed ashore. Marine experts recommend avoiding contact with them as their sting can be painful and potentially serious. Coastguards in Wales also issued warnings after similar creatures were spotted on Porth Trecastell beach near Caernarfon.

Referred to as ‘disco’ animals, these creatures are actually mauve jellyfish, comprising a small percentage of jellyfish sightings in the UK. Swimmers are advised to steer clear of Portuguese man o’ war if possible. In case of a sting, washing the affected area with seawater, removing any tentacles with a card, and applying hot water are recommended before seeking medical assistance.
