Yu Yiting started strong, being under world-record pace in the butterfly leg, but American Regan Smith briefly took the lead in the backstroke. Yu regained the lead in the breaststroke and managed to hold off McIntosh in the final stretch. This marked McIntosh’s third individual medal at the championships, adding to her gold in the 400m medley and silver in the 200m freestyle. She also contributed to Canada’s bronze in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay.
Reflecting on her performance, McIntosh expressed that despite a good swim, the overall meet did not meet her expectations. She acknowledged the need for reflection and improvement for the upcoming season. The 19-year-old, who holds the world record in the event, emphasized her learning experience and growth as she transitions into her twenties.
In another event, Canadian Alexanne Lepage clinched the gold in the women’s 200m breaststroke, beating the reigning Olympic champion Kate Douglass. Lepage led throughout the race and finished with a lifetime best of 2:21.73. Douglass finished second with a time of 2:22.57, while Kaylene Corbett of South Africa claimed the bronze.
Canada concluded the championships with a total of 13 medals, including three gold, four silver, and six bronze medals, marking their most successful performance at the Pan Pacific Championships since 1997. The United States topped the medal standings with 50 medals, followed by Australia with 35 and Canada in third place.
Additionally, Taylor Ruck set a new Canadian record in the women’s 50m freestyle, finishing fourth in a highly competitive final. Ruck expressed her satisfaction with the result, highlighting the payoff of her hard work during the year. Kate Douglass set a world record in the same event, continuing her impressive performance at the championships.
The championships also saw notable achievements, including Lani Pallister of Australia defeating Katie Ledecky in the 800m freestyle, marking Ledecky’s first international loss in the event. Sam Short of Australia set a championship record in the men’s 1,500m freestyle, while Jamie Jack claimed victory in the men’s 50m freestyle.
