Stephen Eustaquio readily accepted the opportunity to join Swansea City, following his recent success with Canada at the World Cup. The midfielder was enticed by the chance to aid the Welsh club in their pursuit of returning to the Premier League and reuniting with a familiar coach.
Swansea City officially announced the signing of the 29-year-old from Porto, sealing a two-year deal with the possibility of extending for another season. Eustaquio expressed his excitement to work with head coach Vitor Matos, emphasizing the familiarity from their time together at Porto as a key factor in his decision.
Reflecting on Swansea’s previous season where they finished 11th in the Championship standings, Eustaquio acknowledged the challenging journey ahead to regain Premier League status. Despite the difficulty, he sees the potential for a remarkable season by focusing on each game and creating a special atmosphere at the stadium.
Originally from Leamington, Ont., Eustaquio relocated to Portugal in his youth. Prior to his tenure at Porto, he played for Chaves in Portugal and Cruz Azul in Mexico. With over 150 appearances for Porto in four-and-a-half years, Eustaquio also had a brief loan spell at Los Angeles FC earlier this year.
Having earned 61 caps for Canada and participating in the last two World Cups, Eustaquio played a pivotal role in Canada’s recent World Cup campaign, scoring a crucial goal against South Africa. He reflected on the joy of the tournament and the pride in setting records for his country.
Eustaquio is set to wear jersey No. 46 for Swansea and is anticipated to make his debut against Derby County this weekend.
