“Buck Martinez to be Inducted into Blue Jays Hall of Excellence”

The Toronto Blue Jays are set to honor Buck Martinez, a veteran broadcaster, by inducting him into the team’s newly established Hall of Excellence during a ceremony at Rogers Centre on Saturday. Martinez, who recently retired after calling over 4,000 games, had a distinguished career spanning almost four decades with the organization in various roles as a player, manager, and broadcaster.

Expressing his gratitude, Martinez mentioned that being recognized in such a manner was a surprising and significant honor for him. He acknowledged the Jays fans for their unwavering support throughout the years, making him feel like a part of their extended family.

Known for his distinctive broadcasting style and iconic catchphrases like “a swing and a drive” and “get outta here ball,” Martinez attributed his unique approach to his time in Milwaukee and his experience as a player. He mentioned that phrases like “get up, get up, get up, get out of here” were inspired by his interactions with teammates during his playing days.

Following his retirement, Martinez reflected on the significant change in transitioning from being actively involved in professional baseball since 1967 to a spectator in the stands. He shared that despite his intention to participate in the Jays’ 50th season celebrations, health issues, including a second battle with cancer in 2025 (initially diagnosed in 2022), required him to step away. Martinez happily confirmed that he is now cancer-free and in good health.

The Hall of Excellence, located on the 100 Level concourse behind right field, will feature an exhibit honoring key figures who shaped the franchise, including players, coaches, builders, and broadcasters. Notably, all 11 current members of the team’s Level of Excellence will be included in this prestigious collection.

Reflecting on his journey from feeling “exiled” when joining the Blue Jays in 1981 to becoming an integral part of the team, Martinez praised the city of Toronto and its passionate baseball fans. Recalling the excitement of last year’s World Series, he highlighted the unforgettable moments and team chemistry that made it one of the best series he has witnessed.

In closing, Martinez shared his surprise at seeing the struggles of star player Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and emphasized how the challenges in the game serve as a reminder of its complexity, even for the most talented athletes.
