British Traveler Arrested in Thailand with Meth

Published on

A British traveler has been apprehended in Thailand for allegedly trying to transport a suitcase containing crystal methamphetamine. The arrest occurred after the suspect received a significant quantity of meth from another British individual at a hotel in Bangkok’s red-light district on Monday night. Law enforcement officers raided the man’s hotel room at Le Fenix on Sukhumvit Soi 11 and took him into custody.

During the arrest, the British national claimed he had been in Thailand for two weeks and professed ignorance about the contents of his bag when questioned by the authorities. However, upon inspecting the suitcase, officers discovered 10 green foil bags of Chinese tea concealing crystal methamphetamine underneath a pair of flip-flops and a white towel. The suspect repeatedly stated that he did not know what the substance was. Subsequently, the authorities conducted a chemical test on the drugs and verified it as methamphetamine. The tourist is currently detained and is scheduled to appear in court the following day.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Noppha Thongbo of the Lumpini district station, the arrest took place on September 29 at 6 pm. The suspect is in police custody and will be transferred to the Bangkok South Criminal Court for further legal proceedings.

The accused reportedly disclosed to the police that he received the methamphetamine in a pink suitcase from a British drug courier known as “Snoopy” and was compensated 20,000 THB (£460) for his involvement. Thai law enforcement officials asserted that the suspect was planning to transport the narcotics through Suvarnabhumi International Airport to their final destination country, where accomplices were awaiting the delivery. However, authorities had been monitoring the suspects for several days based on gathered intelligence.

After verifying the delivery of the packages through hotel CCTV footage, law enforcement obtained a search warrant from the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) to search the suspect’s hotel room. Inside, they purportedly discovered 9,152.3 grams of crystal methamphetamine packaged in tea foil bags referred to locally as “Ice.”

Officials indicated that the methamphetamine was likely produced in drug labs in conflict-ridden Myanmar before being trafficked to Thailand, which serves as a key transit point for illicit activities. Colonel Siranawitcha Intorn, Superintendent of the Crime Suppression Division, Metropolitan Police Bureau Division 5, stated that the suspect faces charges related to the distribution of Category 1 narcotics, specifically methamphetamine, with the intent to sell, contributing to the proliferation of drugs in the community.

Lieutenant Colonel Pongtanin Bamrungsuksawat, Deputy Chief of the Detective Division, Metropolitan Police Division 5, acted as an interpreter during the arrest process. He confirmed that the suspect acknowledged ownership of the items, was informed of the charges against him, and was taken into custody for legal proceedings.

Thailand has gained notoriety as a hub for drug production and trafficking, particularly the production of methamphetamine in the “Golden Triangle” region bordering Laos and Myanmar. Efforts to combat drug production have been complicated by the presence of criminal organizations from China and ongoing conflict in Myanmar, which has facilitated the exploitation of lucrative drug networks.

A spokesperson from the FCDO stated that they are in communication with Thai authorities following the arrest of the British individual.
