Keir Starmer is set to declare the acknowledgment of Palestinian statehood by Britain today. The Prime Minister is anticipated to deliver this statement on Sunday, as pledged in July if the situation in Gaza did not show improvement.
Downing Street now perceives a significant deterioration in the situation, deeming the images of violence, starvation, and suffering as unbearable. The formal recognition to the United Nations by Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy is scheduled for Monday.
In his demands made in July, Mr. Starmer insisted on Hamas releasing all hostages, agreeing to a ceasefire, disarming, and renouncing any involvement in the governance of Gaza. These demands remain unchanged.
Earlier reports indicated a delay in the announcement by No10 until after Donald Trump’s state visit, a claim refuted by Mr. Starmer during a press conference at Chequers. When questioned whether the recognition could be seen as a reward for Hamas, Mr. Starmer unequivocally stated that Hamas, being a terrorist organization, has no place in Palestine’s future governance.
He further emphasized his stance on Hamas, highlighting their opposition to a two-state solution, peace, and ceasefires. Mr. Starmer clarified that the timing of the recognition decision was unrelated to the state visit and had been discussed with the president.
