Ricky Hatton was reportedly in good health during a visit from his family shortly before his passing, according to testimony at a Coroner’s Court session on Thursday.
The inquest, presided over by Alison Mutch at South Manchester’s Coroner’s Court in Stockport, indicated ‘hanging’ as the initial cause of death. A comprehensive inquest is scheduled for March 20, 2026.
Paul Speak, Hatton’s manager and longtime friend, discovered Hatton unresponsive at his residence in Gee Cross, Hyde, on September 14. They were planning to travel to Dubai from Manchester Airport.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed Hatton’s demise and stated that there were no suspicious circumstances, leading to the referral of the case to the coroner.
During the hearing, it was mentioned that Hatton was last seen looking well by family members two days before he was found unresponsive. He had returned home but failed to attend a scheduled event the following day, without specifics being disclosed in court.
Following Hatton’s passing, Speak recounted entering Hatton’s home, noticing unusual signs, and eventually contacting authorities. Speak expressed his belief that Hatton did not intend to take his own life.
Subsequent to Hatton’s funeral at Manchester Cathedral, a procession passed through various locations significant to Hatton’s life, including the unveiling of a mural in his honor at the Harehill Tavern.
Notable figures like Tyson Fury, Liam Gallagher, and Frank Bruno attended the service, where eulogies were delivered, emphasizing Hatton’s status as a boxing icon and working-class hero.
After the service, the procession made a stop at the Etihad Stadium before proceeding to a private committal attended by family members only.
