A man known as a “bake and run” thief was captured on video stealing baguettes from a local Greggs bakery. Darren Humphreys, aged 59, was caught after police found mayonnaise from a Greggs sandwich on his face. He repeatedly targeted the Greggs store in Workington, Cumbria, stealing baguettes and sausage rolls on multiple occasions.

Surveillance footage showed Humphreys reaching into the bakery fridge before casually taking a bottle of coke without paying. On one occasion, he even pushed a staff member who confronted him during a theft. Despite denying the charges, Humphreys was found guilty in court after testimonies from Greggs employees and police officers.

The thefts began on April 24 when Humphreys was caught stealing baguettes and pushing a manager who tried to stop him. Subsequent thefts occurred on various dates, with Humphreys being identified through CCTV footage. He was eventually apprehended by police near a bus station where he was seen eating stolen sandwiches.

Humphreys, without legal representation, chose not to provide evidence during the trial. He was convicted on all charges and faces a potential ban from entering any Greggs stores in Cumbria. The court also heard applications for costs and compensation, with sentencing scheduled for October 8. Humphreys was released on bail with the condition of staying away from Greggs stores.
