Numerous websites and applications are currently experiencing outages due to a widespread disruption in Amazon Web Services (AWS). AWS plays a crucial role in powering the infrastructure of many digital platforms, but is currently facing technical difficulties, resulting in a significant number of online services functioning below par.
Impacted platforms include popular services like Snapchat, Slack, Ring, Signal, as well as major UK entities such as Virgin Media, BT, EE, Sky, and the online portals of leading banks like Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland. The HMRC website has also been affected by the ongoing outage.
AWS has acknowledged the issue and reported progress in resolving it. A recent update states, “We are witnessing recovery across most affected AWS Services. Global services and features dependent on US-EAST-1 have also been restored. Efforts are ongoing towards complete resolution, with further updates to follow.”
Additionally, an earlier statement mentioned, “We have identified a potential root cause for error rates for the DynamoDB APIs in the US-EAST-1 Region. The issue, related to DNS resolution of the DynamoDB API endpoint in US-EAST-1, is being addressed through multiple strategies to expedite recovery, impacting various AWS Services in the US-EAST-1 Region.”
Downdetector data indicates a surge in reports on Monday morning, with over 2,681 incidents related to AWS. An HMRC representative acknowledged the situation, attributing the access problems to global AWS issues and advising customers to expect delays due to high call volumes.
Likewise, a spokesperson from Lloyds Bank confirmed service disruptions caused by AWS problems and requested customers’ patience as they strive to restore full functionality promptly.
