The Australian music industry has implemented new rules that could result in a Madonna cover being banned from official charts. The Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) has decided to exclude tracks generated solely by artificial intelligence from qualifying for the ARIA charts. ARIA spokesperson Andrew Knowles stated that recordings must be primarily human-made to be eligible for the charts. Tracks heavily relying on generative AI for creative elements, such as lead vocals or instruments, will not meet the criteria. The association will also monitor for any potential stream or chart manipulation concerns and ensure compliance with copyright laws. Additionally, recordings produced by generative AI will not be considered for the prestigious ARIA Awards.

This decision follows the popularity of a Brisbane DJ and producer’s rendition of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer,” which utilized AI-generated vocals and drums, sparking debate and criticism. The controversial single spent significant time on the ARIA Top 20 Australian Singles chart, prompting discussions about the role of generative AI in music production. The artist faced backlash online, with accusations of solely AI-generated music, leading to a heated exchange between music producer Mitch Thomas and the DJ.

The updated rules will take effect next Monday, disqualifying entirely AI-generated tracks from the ARIA charts. However, music created with AI assistance may still be considered eligible. ARIA confirmed that the Madonna cover, featuring AI elements, did not meet the new eligibility criteria.
