Google has announced a crucial update for users of the Chrome browser on older macOS systems. While Chrome will remain functional on MacBooks and iMacs, it will no longer receive updates or security patches, potentially exposing users to security risks and technical issues.
Starting in July, Google will discontinue Chrome updates for Macs running macOS 12 (Monterey) or earlier versions. Users on these platforms will need to upgrade to a newer operating system, like macOS Ventura, to ensure continued browser support.
Unfortunately, some older Mac models, such as iMacs predating 2017 and MacBook Air models purchased before 2018, may not be compatible with macOS Ventura. This could require affected users to invest in a new device for secure Chrome usage.
The final Chrome version supporting macOS 12 (Monterey) will be Chrome 150. Subsequently, Chrome 151, set for release on July 28, 2026, will mandate macOS 13 Ventura or later. Users must transition to macOS 13 or newer to receive future Chrome updates.
Although older Chrome versions will remain operable, no further updates will be provided for users on macOS 12 (Monterey). Google advises these users to upgrade to macOS 13 Ventura or a newer supported version to access the latest security features and Chrome enhancements.
