Emma Raducanu, aged 22, was compelled to withdraw from her Wuhan match against Ann Li following a medical evaluation by the WTA physio and tournament doctor. Raducanu, trailing 6-1, 4-1 against Li, had no alternative but to retire due to health reasons. Post-match, Li expressed her well wishes for Raducanu’s speedy recovery, noting that Raducanu seemed unwell during the match.
Despite starting strong by breaking her opponent in the opening game, Raducanu began to struggle, displaying signs of dizziness before receiving medical attention. Li capitalized on the situation, winning six consecutive games, ultimately leading Raducanu to end the match. The challenging playing conditions, with high humidity at 60% and temperatures around 35 degrees, added to the difficulty of the match.
Raducanu’s premature withdrawal adds to the recent trend of players retiring or withdrawing from tournaments. The young player had expressed disappointment over her recent defeats prior to the Wuhan Open, citing losses to Barbora Krejcikova and Jessica Pegula in previous matches. Despite these setbacks, Raducanu remains focused on securing a seeded position at the upcoming Australian Open as part of her future goals in the sport.
