London Mayor Sadiq Khan criticized Donald Trump’s policies as promoting fear and division, responding to Trump’s claim that he had requested Khan not be invited to a recent state banquet. The Mirror has learned that Khan did not expect an invitation to the event despite Trump’s assertion that Khan wanted to attend but was blocked.
In their ongoing clash, a source close to Khan rebuked Trump for undermining London, describing the city as a global success story that is open, dynamic, and safer than many major US cities. The source highlighted the increasing number of Americans choosing to live in London.
During his return to the US after the state visit, Trump referred to Khan as a “disaster” on immigration and criticized him as one of the worst mayors globally, attributing high crime rates in London to Khan’s leadership. Trump stated that he had specifically requested Khan not be present at the state banquet, asserting that Khan desired to attend, but he opposed it.
This dispute between Trump and Khan dates back to previous incidents. In 2016, Trump challenged Khan to an IQ test following comments on Trump’s views on Islam. In 2019, just before his first state visit to the UK, Trump labeled Khan a “stone cold loser” who should focus on addressing crime in London.
Ahead of Trump’s visit to the UK, Khan accused Trump and his associates of fueling divisive far-right politics globally. In an article for the Guardian coinciding with Trump’s state visit, Khan urged Londoners to unite against fear-mongering tactics employed by Trump and his followers.
