Hari Budha Magar, a Gurkha from Nepal, served with the British Army for 15 years before losing both his legs in an IED explosion in Afghanistan in 2010. Instead of focusing on his own challenges, Hari has dedicated himself to motivating others to believe in the possibility of overcoming any obstacles in life.
Setting an extraordinary example, Hari, aged 46, became the first above-the-knee amputee to conquer Everest. He now aims to achieve the feat of scaling the highest peaks on all seven continents, with just two mountains left to climb by January 2026.
Recently honored with a Special Recognition Award at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards, Hari expressed his delight, stating, “It was such an honor. I just wanted to climb mountains and raise awareness about disability.”
Despite his extensive mountain-climbing journeys worldwide, Hari had never experienced a cruise ship voyage until P&O Cruises, the new primary sponsor of the awards, surprised all winners with a cruise holiday.
Thrilled by the unexpected gesture, Hari, a father of three kids aged 12 to 29, shared, “The holiday was a family trip, not just for me. We had never been on a cruise holiday before, and it was a perfect opportunity for us to bond and engage in new experiences together.”
Embarking on a spring voyage to the Norwegian Fjords aboard the Iona cruise ship, the family relished a week exploring the scenic wonders ashore. Hari expressed his surprise at the ample time spent on land, including cable car rides up mountains and fjord explorations.
Among the highlights was the family’s ride on the Loen Skylift to Mount Hoven, boasting stunning views of Nordfjord. Hari described the experience as amazing, with snowfall at the peak and exciting amenities like a bar and a glass-floored lookout.
Hari cherished the train journey to Olden, a fjord village renowned for its natural beauty, including valleys, peaks, glaciers, and waterfalls. He appreciated the accessibility of various spots for those with mobility constraints, making it an ideal destination for him.
Reflecting on the cruise ship experience, Hari praised the onboard facilities such as the cinema, swimming pools, and whirlpool spa. He particularly enjoyed the Celebration Night and a family dinner at Epicurean to celebrate his daughter’s birthday.
Additionally, Hari took the opportunity to share his inspirational journey with fellow passengers aboard the ship, receiving positive feedback and engaging with many individuals who approached him and his family.
Although accustomed to mountain environments, Hari discovered a newfound love for the sea during the cruise, expressing interest in planning future holiday voyages. He encouraged others with similar concerns about accessibility to take the leap, emphasizing the friendliness of people and the overall positive experience onboard.
