“Demystifying Broadband: Importance and Speed Explained”

Published on

Broadband is considered a crucial utility service, ranking alongside electricity, gas, and water. Its importance lies in the fact that many essential services now rely on broadband connectivity to operate effectively.

For tasks such as checking bank account balances, contacting local authorities, staying in touch with family members, or seeking assistance, a reliable broadband connection is indispensable. Moreover, as traditional phone lines are gradually being phased out, even making landline phone calls may soon require a broadband connection.

Despite being a common source of complaints, issues with broadband services are often not pursued by many individuals, mainly due to a lack of understanding regarding how broadband functions.

While explaining broadband speed in simple terms has been challenging, there is a growing interest among readers in understanding how broadband operates and whether they are receiving a fair service.

To shed light on this topic, I have enlisted the help of Saveen Rajan, an expert from BroadbandUK, an independent broadband and connectivity specialist. Together, we aim to demystify the workings of broadband.

To begin, understanding the terms used in broadband speed measurements is essential. Broadband speed is typically quantified in megabits per second (Mbps), indicating the rate at which data is transferred or utilized each second. Higher Mbps values result in faster downloading, streaming, and uploading of data.

Have you ever wondered why your broadband package advertises “50 Mbps” yet your actual downloads display only “6 MB/s”? This discrepancy is due to the difference in units used – Mbps for advertised speed and MB/s for actual download speed, with 8 bits comprising one byte.

Therefore, a 50 Mbps package equates to approximately 6 MB/s, which is sufficient for tasks like streaming movies, binge-watching TV shows, and swiftly downloading music albums.

For various online activities such as browsing and emailing, a speed of around 10 Mbps is adequate, while HD streaming may require 25 Mbps. Larger households, gamers, or individuals streaming 4K content might necessitate speeds of 50 Mbps or higher.

Higher speeds become crucial when multiple users are simultaneously online, especially in households with several connected devices. Understanding the type of broadband connection you have is crucial, as it directly impacts the speed and reliability of your internet service.

Various connection types, such as full fiber, part-fiber with copper, cable, or mobile (4G/5G), deliver broadband services with differing speeds and reliability levels. Full fiber offers the fastest and most dependable connection, while part-fiber with copper may experience speed degradation over longer distances from the exchange.

Cable connections can provide high-speed internet where available, while mobile connections offer quick speeds but with less consistency. Being aware of your broadband connection type can give you insights into the expected speed performance.
