Android users are being advised to remain cautious as a new alarming cyberattack threat emerges. This latest menace, named DroidLock, has raised concerns as it locks phones once infiltrated, demanding a ransom to avoid permanent file destruction.

The security team at Zimperium discovered DroidLock, which is currently impacting Android users in certain parts of Europe. The threat is being spread through deceitful websites promoting fake apps that mimic legitimate software. Upon installation, DroidLock seizes full control of devices, monitoring screen unlock codes.

Subsequently, hackers can manipulate the codes, locking users out of their phones. Victims are then presented with a ransom demand through a screen overlay, threatening file deletion if the payment is not made. A countdown timer adds pressure by displaying the remaining time for compliance.

Zimperium stated, “The ZLabs research team has identified a new threat campaign targeting Android users.” Described as ransomware, DroidLock spreads via phishing websites, locking screens with a ransom-like overlay and illicitly obtaining app lock credentials, resulting in a complete device takeover.

Although DroidLock has not yet reached the UK, Android users are advised to remain vigilant. It is crucial for users to only download apps from official sources like Google’s Play Store to safeguard against such threats. Individuals urged to sideload software from websites should verify the developer’s authenticity and refrain from downloading suspicious content.
