Nigel Farage faces backlash over alleged derogatory remarks towards the LGBTQ+ community by suggesting that heterosexual couples are more likely to maintain stable relationships.
The leader of Reform UK came under scrutiny after comments made by MP Danny Kruger, who recently switched allegiance to Farage’s party. Kruger, son of Great British Bake Off judge Prue Leith, asserted at a conservative event in 2023 that traditional heterosexual marriages were fundamental to a secure and prosperous society.
Responding to Kruger’s statements, Farage, who has been married twice, expressed his belief that children raised by two stable parents have a better upbringing. He emphasized that relationships between men and women tend to be the most enduring.
Labour MP Nadia Whittome condemned Farage’s remarks, labeling them as “vile homophobia” and accused him of attempting to reignite contentious issues like same-sex marriage and adoption to fuel division and hatred.
Stonewall, a LGBTQ+ rights organization, highlighted the importance of diverse family structures and emphasized that children thrive best in nurturing and supportive environments regardless of the family makeup.
Statistics from the Office for National Statistics in 2023 revealed divorce rates per 1,000 married individuals, with slightly higher rates for same-sex civil partnerships compared to heterosexual marriages.
Following his defection, Kruger, known for his hardline stance with the New Conservatives group, will lead a new unit within Reform aimed at preparing for potential governance.
In response to the defection, a Labour spokesperson criticized Farage for aligning with former Conservative members, emphasizing their alleged failure in governance.
Kruger joins a list of former Tory MPs, including Nadine Dorries, Dame Andrea Jenkyns, and Sir Jake Berry, who have switched allegiance to Farage’s party.
Farage’s spokesperson cited research from the National Library of Medicine highlighting the significance of both mothers and fathers in child development.
