A man from Germany met a tragic fate after being bitten and killed by his pet black widow spider, leading to his body being consumed by his numerous other pets, which included 200 insects and lizards in his home resembling a zoo.
In 2004, police discovered the lifeless body of Mark Voegel in his small apartment, overrun by a variety of creepy crawlies feeding on him. The fatal spider bite was from a black widow named Bettina, whose venom was exceptionally potent, surpassing that of a rattlesnake, cobra, and coral snake.
Described as a recluse, Voegel lived in solitude in his Dortmund residence, which police likened to a mix of botanical gardens and a scene from The Silence of the Lambs due to its eerie atmosphere. Besides spiders, Voegel also kept snakes, frogs, and a gecko in his home.
Tragically, Voegel was believed to have passed away one to two weeks before his body was discovered, prompted by neighbors reporting a foul odor emanating from his apartment. The apartment was found in a chaotic state, with open cages and terrariums allowing his pets to roam freely.
The grim scene was likened to a horror movie by police, with spiders and lizards devouring his body, creating a disturbing sight of webs and flesh. Experts criticized Voegel’s pet collection, highlighting the aggressive nature of some spiders, comparing them to pit bulls in the animal kingdom.
