A mother persisted for a decade to uncover the cause of concerning symptoms she was facing, despite doctors attributing them to “anxiety.” Tameika McBride had been grappling with symptoms since 2015, but medical professionals consistently reassured her that everything was normal, as her blood tests showed no abnormalities.
Despite her intuition that something was amiss, it wasn’t until she detected a significant swelling in her neck a few weeks postpartum that she demanded answers. Following initial reassurances that it was likely benign, an ultrasound revealed the devastating truth: she had cancer.
Expressing her emotional turmoil, the 30-year-old stay-at-home mother stated, “I was shattered and believed it was a death sentence. With two young children, aged four and two, I was gripped by panic. It was a traumatizing experience – I was overwhelmed and couldn’t contain my tears.”
Recalling her journey, Tameika shared, “I repeatedly consulted my doctor about my symptoms, only to be told it was anxiety, and that my blood tests were normal. Although the symptoms didn’t incapacitate me, and I was generally content, I reluctantly accepted that my condition was deemed typical.”
During her pregnancy in 2019, medical examinations revealed Tameika had an underactive thyroid, which was managed with medication as it can occur during pregnancy. Post-medication, she experienced weight gain and a bloated appearance, yet was once again assured that her blood work was clear.
In August 2023, six weeks post-delivery, Tameika noticed the visible enlargement of her thyroid for the first time. Describing her experience, she said, “I had a tender, sore thyroid on the left side that was visibly prominent. I consulted a doctor who promptly referred me to the ER.”
Following inconclusive initial scans, Tameika’s concerns resurfaced in November 2024 when she discovered a swollen lymph node on her neck. Despite initial assurances from her doctor, she persisted and upon reevaluation, received the devastating diagnosis of cancer.
Subsequent tests confirmed thyroid cancer and Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune condition attacking the thyroid gland. The cancer was identified as a rare and aggressive variant, with unexpected spread, placing Tameika in a high-risk category.
In June, Tameika underwent radioactive iodine treatment to combat remaining cancerous lymph nodes. Battling post-cancer fatigue and uncertainties, she expressed gratitude for the support received during this challenging period – emphasizing her determination to heal and remain strong for her children.
Continuing treatment and adopting high-dose Vitamin C infusions, Tameika navigates her recovery with resilience. She acknowledged the kindness and support received, underscoring the significance of community aid in her treatment journey.
