Labour leader Keir Starmer has strongly criticized the Israeli military’s bombing of Hamas leaders in Qatar, labeling the action as “completely unacceptable” during a meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog. Following the discussion, a spokesperson from Downing Street condemned the bombing as a “flagrant violation” and highlighted concerns about the manmade famine in Gaza. The meeting had stirred controversy before the Israeli military targeted top Hamas figures in Doha while they were discussing a US proposal for a Gaza ceasefire.

In a statement after the meeting, a Downing Street representative expressed Starmer’s condemnation of Israel’s actions in Doha, emphasizing that the strikes infringed on the sovereignty of a key partner and hindered efforts to achieve peace. Starmer urged Israel to change its approach towards Gaza, calling for the easing of restrictions on aid access and the cessation of offensive operations. Both leaders agreed on the necessity of releasing hostages taken by Hamas nearly two years ago.

During Prime Minister’s Questions, the PM denounced the strikes for violating Qatar’s sovereignty and undermining peace efforts. He mentioned speaking to the Emir of Qatar to convey support after the attack, emphasizing the commitment to diplomatic solutions for a ceasefire and a two-state resolution.

Amid backlash, Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer downplayed suggestions that the UK had given special treatment to the Israeli president. Responding to questions, Falconer clarified that President Herzog’s visit was private, indicating that no red carpet reception was extended.

After the meeting, President Herzog characterized the discussions as candid and robust, highlighting the ability of allies to engage in disagreements constructively due to their shared democratic values and common threat perceptions.
