Abdul Majid emphasizes the importance of displaying flags correctly as he illuminates Rotherham’s Unity Boxing Centre. The gym, situated in refurbished offices formerly belonging to the town’s renowned steel mill, showcases flags from various countries, radiating under the strip-lights.
Welcoming all, the towering 6ft 3 boxing coach explains that the flags symbolize the diverse backgrounds of the numerous boxers, both young and old, who frequent the gym, demonstrating respect for their respective homelands.
Leading a tour around the flags, Abdul delves into the origin of each, starting with England, his birthplace, followed by his ancestral ties to Kashmir, Pakistan. He recounts the gym’s evolution, welcoming individuals from Yemen, Lebanon, Wales, Romania, Poland, Palestine, Turkey, Jamaica, and other nations, fostering a sense of unity regardless of nationality or heritage.
After experiencing the loss of his father at a young age, Abdul found solace in supporting youth at the gym, promoting unity among individuals from diverse backgrounds. Amid the backdrop of the town’s industrial history and socioeconomic challenges, the gym stands as a beacon of solidarity, defying Rotherham’s divisive reputation.
Despite Rotherham’s association with past controversies, including the child exploitation scandal, Abdul remains committed to making a positive impact in the community, especially considering the recent tensions and incidents in the town.
The gym, Unity Boxing Centre, serves as a haven for around 200 young people from different communities in Rotherham, offering daily sessions overseen by dedicated organizers like Emma Sharp and experienced coaches like Atif Shafiq.
In the face of escalating tensions and social unrest, exemplified by the proliferation of flags and protests, Abdul and his team at the gym strive to uphold a message of inclusivity and understanding, inspiring hope for a more harmonious future.
By sharing stories of resilience and camaraderie, Unity Boxing Centre continues to serve as a powerful symbol of unity and strength in the face of adversity, embodying the belief that diversity should be celebrated rather than a cause for division.
