Rahm Wins Second Consecutive LIV Golf Title

Published on

Jon Rahm acknowledged that Joaquin Niemann was possibly more deserving of winning the LIV Golf championship after narrowly defeating the Chilean. Despite losing in a playoff after finishing 22-under in Indianapolis, Rahm clinched his second consecutive LIV title.

The triumph earned the 30-year-old a substantial £13.3 million in prize money. While Rahm shot an impressive 11-under on Sunday, he was not crowned the champion for that weekend’s competition. Instead, the title went to Sebastian Munoz, Niemann’s teammate at Torque GC, who set a professional golf record with a remarkable 59 on Friday.

Niemann, with five wins this year compared to Rahm’s none, suggested a review of the points system in LIV Golf after narrowly missing out on the overall victory. However, he commended Rahm for his performance, acknowledging the intense battle on the course.

Rahm, coming off two consecutive playoff defeats, finished the season with four runner-up finishes and eight top 10 placements. Despite winning the overall title, Rahm expressed mixed feelings, hinting at potential flaws in LIV’s current system.

Praising Niemann, who received a £5.9 million bonus, Rahm highlighted the Chilean’s exceptional performance throughout the year and acknowledged Niemann’s strong case for the championship. Rahm now boasts his second LIV Golf triumph alongside previous victories at the 2023 Masters and the 2021 US Open, adding to his impressive track record of major top-five finishes.

The top performers from the weekend’s LIV event in Indianapolis included Munoz (-22*), Rahm (-22), Dustin Johnson (-20), Niemann (-17), David Puig (-17), Branden Grace (-17), and Carlos Ortiz (-17).
