A tragic incident has occurred as a young mother who underwent a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) surgery for her birthday passed away shortly after the procedure. Marilha Menezes Antunes, aged 28, underwent liposuction on her back with fat transfer to her buttocks at a private clinic in Brazil, accompanied by her father and sister Léa Carolina. Léa recalled hearing a nurse urgently calling for an ambulance during the operation but received no response when inquiring about the situation.
Upon entering the operating room, Léa witnessed the doctor attempting to resuscitate her sister. Following the doctor’s request for oxygen, emergency services were contacted, eventually leading to the involvement of the Military Police, who then issued a death certificate. Initially, the doctor mentioned that Marilha experienced bronchoaspiration and a cardiorespiratory arrest, but an autopsy revealed that she succumbed to hypovolemic shock, internal bleeding, and blunt-force trauma.
Despite assertions from Marilha’s relatives that she was in good health and had undertaken all necessary precautions and medical tests, they suspect that a punctured organ resulted in fatal hemorrhaging. Seeking clarity, the family is demanding answers from the Rio de Janeiro clinic where the surgery took place.
Describing Marilha as vibrant and full of life, Léa expressed her devastation over the unexpected turn of events, stating, “I took her to fulfill a dream, but instead, she encountered death.”
The clinic responded to the incident by clarifying its role as a day hospital, emphasizing its provision of infrastructure and support for independent medical teams conducting procedures on-site. They affirmed the immediate response of the medical team upon detecting signs of hemodynamic instability during the surgery.
Marilha, a mother to a six-year-old child and employed as an occupational safety technician in the aviation sector, is the subject of an ongoing investigation into her untimely death, with the clinic pledging full cooperation with the authorities.
