Aldi has revealed its intention to shut down all its stores in the United Kingdom for a three-day period later this year. This decision allows employees to share part of the Christmas break with their loved ones.
The discount supermarket chain currently runs more than 1,050 stores across England, Scotland, and Wales, with plans for further expansion to reach a total of 1,500 locations. Known for its wide range of affordable products and the popular middle aisle featuring ever-changing SpecialBuys, Aldi has gained favor among customers.
In an announcement made on September 10, the company confirmed that it would close its establishments on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, which fall on December 25 and 26, respectively. The shut-down will be temporary, with stores set to reopen on Saturday, December 27. Another closure is scheduled for New Year’s Day on January 1, with a reopening on Friday, January 2, 2026. Normal operating hours will resume between December 27 and 31.
This decision by the executives of the UK’s fourth-largest supermarket aligns with previous Christmas practices, allowing store employees to enjoy time with their families and friends. Leading up to Christmas, Aldi will have extended hours to accommodate customers preparing for the festive season.
Rebecca Heley, the communications director at Aldi UK, emphasized the significance of the holiday season, stating, “Christmas is a special time, and we want to ensure all of our colleagues have the opportunity to relax and enjoy it with their loved ones.” She expressed gratitude towards the hard work of Aldi’s employees in providing an exceptional Christmas experience for customers.
Similar announcements have been made by other retailers this month, informing staff and customers of their holiday plans. B&M announced closure on Christmas Day before reopening on Boxing Day, while Home Bargains declared a three-day closure during the Christmas period, with stores shutting on Christmas Eve at 5 pm and reopening on December 27.
The decision to allow staff to have Christmas Day and Boxing Day off to spend time with their families was made by Home Bargains to acknowledge their dedication throughout the year. The representative of Home Bargains highlighted the importance of family time during the holidays and expressed pride in granting additional time off to their teams to enjoy the festive season.
