“Mother on Trial: Gruesome Discovery in NZ Storage Unit”

Published on

In a surprising turn of events, a family in New Zealand made a shocking discovery when they purchased a storage unit at an auction – two deceased bodies inside. Hakyung Lee, aged 44, is facing trial in Auckland for the alleged murder of her 8-year-old daughter, Yuna Jo, and 6-year-old son, Minu Jo in 2018. Prosecutors claim that Lee drugged her children with a potent antidepressant, resulting in their deaths.

Toxicology tests confirmed the presence of the antidepressant Nortriptyline in the children’s bodies. Although a pathologist determined that the exact method of murder could not be ascertained due to the passage of time, autopsies showed no signs of physical trauma. Nortriptyline, a medication used for depression and nerve pain, can be fatal to children even at low doses, causing seizures and cardiac complications.

Lee allegedly acquired the drug through a prescription following her husband’s cancer diagnosis, expressing feelings of dizziness and sleep disturbances to the doctor. Prosecutors argue that Lee’s mental state deteriorated after her husband’s illness and subsequent death, leading her to commit the heinous act. Lee is reported to have confessed to wrapping her children’s bodies in plastic, sealing them in suitcases, and storing them in a rented storage unit.

Following the incident, Lee fled the country, changed her name, and was eventually extradited from South Korea in 2022. She has pleaded not guilty to the charges of murder, citing insanity as her defense. Her defense attorney claims that Lee experienced a mental breakdown and believed that the entire family should die together. The trial is ongoing, with jurors tasked with determining both Lee’s actions and her mental state at the time of the incident. The proceedings are expected to last up to four weeks.
