A medical tribunal heard that a married doctor engaged in sexual activity with a nurse in an operating theatre while a patient was under anesthesia. Dr. Suhail Anjum and the nurse, identified as Nurse C, were discovered in a compromising situation by a colleague at Tameside Hospital. The incident occurred when Dr. Anjum left his patient in the care of another nursing colleague to take a break but instead went to a different operating theatre where the inappropriate activity took place.
According to Andrew Molloy, representing the General Medical Council, Dr. Anjum was absent from the operating room during a procedure on September 16, 2013, when Nurse NT walked in and witnessed the inappropriate behavior. Nurse NT promptly reported the incident, leading to the investigation by the GMC. Dr. Anjum admitted to the misconduct and acknowledged the potential risk it posed to the patient.
Dr. Anjum expressed regret for his actions, attributing them to a stressful period in his personal life following the premature birth of his daughter. He apologized to all those affected and expressed a desire to rectify the situation. The hearing will continue in Manchester to determine if Dr. Anjum’s professional conduct has been compromised due to his actions.
