Virgin Media users with outdated TV set-top boxes are urged to upgrade promptly as the BBC iPlayer app will soon be inaccessible on aging devices. Homes relying on older equipment will face a block on accessing popular shows like EastEnders, Casualty, and Murder 24/7 once the update takes effect. Virgin Media has notified customers with TiVo boxes that have used BBC iPlayer in the last six months that their devices will not support the app from July 23.
Affected devices primarily include aging TiVo models introduced over a decade ago, while newer V6 and 360 gadgets will not be impacted and will continue to have access to BBC content. Virgin Media has been reaching out to customers with outdated boxes to facilitate upgrades in a timely manner.
Users with older devices are advised to respond positively to Virgin’s upgrade notification to avoid losing access to the iPlayer service. After the July deadline, the streaming app will cease to function on unsupported devices. While the reason for BBC iPlayer losing support remains unclear, this issue is not unique as other platforms like WhatsApp also phase out support for older devices due to compatibility issues with new features.
Apart from ensuring continued access to iPlayer, upgrading to newer Virgin boxes offers additional benefits such as regular updates and bonus channels. Recent updates have introduced new services like British Screen Classics and wedotv movies to Virgin boxes, enhancing the viewing experience for users.
