Former Home Secretary Lord Blunkett’s guide dog has been granted an honorary membership by the GMB union. The union bestowed Labrador Barley with a membership card and assigned the unique membership number “K900000” in anticipation of the Trades Union Congress commencing in Brighton today.
Barley, a hard-working canine, has been embraced as the newest member of the GMB MPs’ and Peers’ Staff Branch, the largest union branch for political staff in the UK. This gesture acknowledges the significant role that working animals, like Barley, fulfill for numerous individuals across the UK.
GMB has a tradition of extending union membership to animal companions in the workplace. Notably, in 1979, the union granted membership to Smudge, a cat employed as a mouser at the People’s Palace in Glasgow, following a request from appreciative colleagues.
Lisa Gillmore, Senior Parliamentary Researcher and President of GMB MPs’ and Peers’ Staff Branch, expressed the importance of recognizing the invaluable contributions of working animals in Britain. She emphasized the branch’s readiness to support Barley in case he encounters any paw-related issues.
Barley expressed his enthusiasm for receiving his membership card, treats, and the contributions made to Guide Dogs from his branch. As the first working animal member of the branch, Barley extended an invitation to fellow guide dogs, Jennie and Nancy, to consider joining as well, highlighting their shared dedication to assisting others.
In response to inquiries about Larry, the renowned No.10 cat, potentially joining the union, a GMB spokesperson indicated that the decision rests with Larry. They also hinted at supporting Larry with a campaign for a cat flap if requested.
The GMB union’s inclusive approach towards working animals underscores their commitment to recognizing the valuable roles these animals play in supporting individuals throughout the UK.
