Nigel Farage has declined to promise the release of his tax records, citing it as an invasion of privacy. The Reform leader, who has disclosed over £800,000 in earnings from external sources since entering Parliament, was questioned about his transparency in comparison to Prime Ministers Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer. Farage expressed his reluctance to make his personal tax returns public, deeming it an unnecessary intrusion.
Furthermore, Farage indicated his disinclination to disclose his tax information. This follows his acknowledgment of an error in claiming ownership of a property in his Clacton constituency, which was actually purchased by his girlfriend. The property, a four-bedroom house with a pool, is solely owned by his partner Laure Ferrari, who paid nearly £900,000 for it. Had Farage acquired the property himself, he would have incurred around £75,000 in second home stamp duty, prompting accusations of hypocrisy given his previous calls for Angela Rayner to resign.
When questioned by Laura Kuenssberg, Farage defended his partner’s property purchase, questioning why it should be an issue. He criticized a Mirror report for its inquiries, labeling it as “disgusting.” Additionally, Farage hinted at the possibility of more former Conservative members joining the Reform party due to its lack of government experience, following the recruitment of ex-Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries.
Despite the potential for additional ministerial recruits, Farage expressed reluctance to welcome Boris Johnson into the party, citing a lack of experience as Reform’s primary weakness. He highlighted concerns that party members would not approve of Johnson’s inclusion, emphasizing the negative impact of migration policies under Johnson’s leadership. Labour Party chairwoman Anna Turley criticized Farage for lacking a clear plan for Britain and admitting doubts about his team’s capability to govern effectively, labeling it as egotism rather than patriotism. Turley emphasized the need for better leadership to address the country’s challenges.
