An overland flood watch has been issued for parts of southwestern Manitoba as heavy rainfall continues from Friday into Saturday. The province’s hydrologic forecast centre issued the watch, predicting rainfall totals of 20 to 40 millimetres for much of southwestern Manitoba, with heavier amounts expected in areas west of Brandon, including Virden and Melita. Some regions could see up to 120 millimetres due to severe thunderstorms.

The rapid accumulation of rainfall can lead to overland flooding, with the potential for the heaviest rainfall to extend into the Saskatchewan area of the Souris River basin. Environment and Climate Change Canada also issued special weather statements for various western Manitoba regions, including Dauphin and Riding Mountain National Park.

Continuing rain is expected in southeastern Saskatchewan and parts of western Manitoba, tapering off overnight. A previous overland flood warning was issued for western Manitoba at the end of June. Many communities in western Manitoba, such as Dauphin, Minitonas, and Swan River, were severely impacted by earlier storms and flooding this year.

Numerous municipalities have declared local states of emergency in response to flooding and storms. Winnipeg is forecasted to experience periods of rain beginning around midnight Saturday, continuing through the morning.
