“U.S. Delegation Holds Crucial Talks in Kyiv to Halt Russia’s Invasion”

Published on

U.S. representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner engaged in positive discussions in Kyiv on Sunday during their inaugural official trip to Ukraine, aiming to halt Russia’s prolonged invasion lasting over 4½ years. The American delegation’s visit follows a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday, amidst escalated aerial assaults by both sides. Efforts by Washington to cease the conflict had waned due to the Trump administration’s recent focus on the Iran situation.

Russia has deployed swift jet-powered drones, leading to frequent air-raid sirens in Kyiv, with troops encountering challenges advancing along the 1,250-kilometer front line. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed the objective of achieving a “just, fair peace” to prevent any future aggression against Ukraine. Zelenskyy appreciated the U.S. negotiators’ visit, their first to Ukraine, and announced upcoming talks with national security advisers from Britain, France, and Germany.

Witkoff described the discussions as “meaningful, substantive, and crucial,” conveying optimism. Kushner emphasized President Donald Trump’s interest in not only ending the current conflict but also establishing conditions for lasting peace. Talks focused on navigating through the upcoming winter and taking necessary actions beforehand, as per a senior Ukrainian official.

The Moscow meeting on Saturday, lasting over three hours, concluded without significant breakthroughs. Putin’s adviser described the talks as constructive, although specific outcomes were not disclosed. Discussions went beyond the Ukraine war, touching on economic matters and potential joint projects beneficial for both Russia and the U.S. Witkoff and Kushner had previously visited Moscow in January for talks with Putin.

Despite an agreed pause in strikes on each other’s capitals, Russia and Ukraine exchanged fire overnight into Sunday, resulting in casualties. Ukrainian regions faced Russian attacks, with casualties reported, while Ukraine’s air force intercepted numerous drones and missiles. In Russia, a drone strike caused casualties near the border with Ukraine.

On the ground in Kyiv, a moment of silence was observed to honor fallen soldiers, with hopes pinned on the ongoing talks in Moscow and Kyiv for a resolution to the conflict. While some, like Nataliia Lipei, expressed optimism, others, such as Oleksandr Pastukhov, remained doubtful about the envoys’ visit bringing substantial change. Pope Leo reiterated his plea for peace in Ukraine and expressed hope for positive outcomes from the negotiations.

The situation remains challenging as Russia and Ukraine grapple with the ongoing conflict, with hopes and skepticism mingling among the affected populace.
