Welcome to our latest newsletter focusing on environmental developments that are driving us towards a more sustainable future.
Hello, I’m Alexandra. The alarming news of eels perishing in large numbers at hydro dams raises concerns. If this involved birds and windmills, the outcry would be immense. These aquatic creatures deserve safe passage through their habitats. Discover a company innovating a technological solution to protect them.
This week’s highlights include the ongoing issue of eels facing fatalities in hydro dam turbines, a breakdown of how heat pumps operate, and an unexpected sighting of an airship above a central Alberta town.
The perilous journey of endangered American eels migrating down the St. Lawrence River to their breeding grounds faces a significant threat from turbine blades at hydroelectric dams. Natel Energy, a California-based startup specializing in fish-friendly turbines, has developed a new turbine runner to prevent these casualties without compromising power generation efficiency.
American eels play a vital role in the ecosystem, symbolizing biodiversity and holding cultural significance to Indigenous communities. The decline in their numbers due to various factors like overfishing and habitat loss underscores the urgency of protecting them.
Natel’s innovative “FishSafe” turbine design, featuring improved blade shape and reduced gaps, is shown to increase eel survival rates significantly. This breakthrough offers hope for the American eel population’s recovery without disrupting power generation operations.
The successful testing of these fish-friendly turbines at a plant in France signifies a positive step towards conservation efforts. Natel Energy aims to demonstrate that prioritizing fish protection can align with economic interests for hydro dam operators.
Join us in advocating for the preservation of these vital aquatic species, as every eel’s survival is integral to the overall health of the ecosystem.
