Actress Selma Blair Arrested for Flight Disturbance

Published on

Actor Selma Blair was taken into custody after allegedly causing harm to two flight attendants during a flight from Los Angeles to New York. Additionally, she faced charges for assaulting a police officer and a nurse while being taken to the hospital. The incident occurred when the Delta Air Lines plane had landed at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport, and Blair, 54, was arrested around 11 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Blair and one of the flight attendants were both transported to the hospital for evaluation, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The police officer involved in the incident reported that Blair resisted being secured to a stretcher, kicking her multiple times in the face, neck, and chest. Subsequently, a nurse was also kicked by Blair, causing significant pain.

Following the events, Blair was arraigned on two counts of second-degree assault late on Monday in a Queens court. During the court appearance, she appeared visibly emotional while her attorney, Shawn Barnes, stated that her actions were not deliberate. Barnes explained that Blair, who has multiple sclerosis, had missed doses of crucial medication, leading to severe neurological symptoms exacerbating her confusion and disorientation during the flight.

The judge set Blair’s bail at $20,000 cash or $60,000 bond US, scheduling the next hearing for January. Delta Airlines emphasized its commitment to customer and crew safety, expressing zero tolerance for disruptive or unlawful behavior onboard flights.

In a previous incident in 2016, Blair publicly apologized for statements made on a flight due to mixing alcohol with medication, causing a blackout. Despite these challenges, Blair has been an advocate for disability rights since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2018, participating in events like the anniversary celebration of the Americans with Disabilities Act at the White House in 2023.
