Serena and Venus Williams have reunited on the courts once again, this time at the U.S. Open. The renowned sisters secured a wild card entry into the tournament, granting them a chance to compete in the doubles event they have triumphed in twice before.
After a prolonged hiatus, Serena Williams made her return to professional tennis this summer, reuniting with her sister Venus. Their plans to compete at Wimbledon were derailed when Serena sustained a knee injury during a singles match, forcing her to withdraw. Their subsequent appearance at the Cincinnati Open ended in an early exit in the first round.
Having clinched the U.S. Open doubles titles in 1999 and 2009, the Williams sisters boast a commendable record of 27 wins and 7 losses in their nine previous appearances at the prestigious tournament. Their most recent outing in Flushing Meadows in 2022 resulted in an unexpected first-round defeat, which was speculated to be Serena’s final match at the venue.
During the current U.S. Open, Serena, aged 44, partnered with Carlos Alcaraz in mixed doubles, advancing through one match before bowing out in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Venus, aged 46, is competing in the women’s singles competition.
The formidable duo of Serena and Venus Williams has a storied history, claiming 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and securing Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2008, and 2012. Their dominance was further exemplified by an eight-week stint as the top-ranked women’s doubles team.
While Serena opted out of the singles competition at the U.S. Open, where she has amassed six of her 23 Grand Slam singles titles, she felt fit enough to accept wild card entries for both doubles events. The sisters’ first U.S. Open doubles victory coincided with Serena’s inaugural singles triumph at the same event. Their peak as a doubles team culminated approximately ten years later.
Their Grand Slam successes in 2009 included titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, followed by a second U.S. Open victory later that season. The subsequent year saw them reign in Australia once more, securing the French Open title as well, solidifying their grasp on all four major trophies at the time.
The commencement of the women’s doubles tournament at the U.S. Open is scheduled for September 3rd.
